Career Pathways

BIOMEDICALENGINEERING
Courses: Honors Biology, Honors Chemistry, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Statistics

PLTW Courses: Principles of Biomedical Science, Human Body Systems, Medical Interventions, Biomedical Innovation

Partnerships

California State University Channel Islands: annual field trip to CSUCI research station on Santa Rosa Island to work with graduate students in ongoing research, including biodiversity monitoring using DNA barcoding.

Coastal Marine Biolabs: students participate in data collection and research to contribute to the iBOL (International Barcode of Life) project to create a DNA barcode to identify all species of organisms on Earth. Students published their DNA barcodes in an article, Kelp Forests of Channel Islands, with NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information) website.

Amgen (multinational biopharmaceutical company headquartered in Thousand Oaks, CA) and Los Angeles Pierce College: in the Amgen Biotech Experience, students prepare reagents, buffers and agarose plates for the kits that other high schools use in their classrooms as well as test all equipment and protocols, after receiving training from Pierce College.

Los Angeles Valley Community College: a cohort of students earned a Biotechnology / Biomanufacturing Certification, which makes them employable at Biotechnology companies, through classes taught at Reseda High School and Valley College.

Oak Crest Institute of Science: provides technical advice for research projects and curriculum as well as summer internship opportunities for research.

GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment): our students took 1st place at the U.S. Regional Science Fair at JPL with their entry Using DNA Barcoding to Study Biodiversity and Mechanisms of Molecular Evolution of Rockfish from the Northern Channel Islands.
